Introduction:Financial Wellness is often overlooked. I am not sure why. Whenever I deliver a seminar that may relate to stress in some way, I ask the question: “Who here is highly skilled in worry?” Everyone has a bit of a laugh as most of them raise their hands. When I ask what they worry about, nearly everyone says money is their number one. What would happen in your workplace if people had nothing to worry about? Who, among your employees, are the excellent money managers? What can you do to raise everyone up to the level of being competent money managers, and what would be the impact on their work? |
Budgeting |
When my son landed his very first part-time job, I asked him what he would do with his money. He looked at me rather blankly. He had not contemplated the question? “Spend it!” I suggested. He shrugged his shoulders and said “Probably.” We talked about saving and accumulating, a conversation I never had with anyone. I have made lots of financial mistakes in my life and allowed significant amounts of money to slip through my fingers. There were some hard lessons. So I opened Excel, one of my favorite toys, and built him a very clever Cash Flow Budget. Then I installed it on his laptop and sat down with him and we spent a couple of hours looking at it and playing with scenarios. I showed him how his savings would accumulate if he stuck to spending policies. Then I explored with him how he could plan for a bigger purchase by finding ways to add to his income so that he did not have to erode his savings to buy something. For weeks, I saw him sitting playing with the Cashflow Budget in the evenings. At one point he wanted to upgrade his PlayStation, so he went through all the games he had that he no longer needed, had them valued, had his current PlayStation valued and found a couple of other things he could sell. Eventually he knew he could create enough to buy the new PlayStation without eroding his savings. He put the plan into action and all sales and purchases went into his document. I now look at him as a 33 year-old business owner, who has about 15 staff, and I am in awe of the way he manages his money. He and his partner are creating significant wealth by being financially responsible and living by their budget. The business “My Budget” that you may see advertising on TV, has created huge success by helping people how to get their finances under control by learning to budget. Perhaps this is a way you can improve Wellbeing in Your workplace. |
Entrepreneur Think Tanks |
Every business, the one you are working in included, needs to keep a lid on costs. Part of this is keeping a lid on wages and salaries. So how can your people get better at creating income outside of work, doing things they enjoy. I met a woman recently who works from home. She creates between $150k and $200k each year by going around to Opp Shops and Community Markets, buying noted label fashion items for pennies, and then selling them on eBay for massive mark-ups. She has a passion for fashion and an eye for a bargain. I wonder what sort of ideas your team members could come up with if you created a weekly space where they could meet over lunch, or a coffee, in our out of work hours, and you created a discussion and ideas sharing initiative called an Entrepreneur Think Tank. |

Eagle School |
An old mate of mine, Grant Gamble, has run Health Clubs for years. He has built some of the worlds![]() He is a big promoter of Staff Empowerment and Heart Centered Leadership. He is a deeply good man. At one of his clubs, he ran a program called “Eagle School”. At Eagle School, which was voluntary and run weekly, he taught his staff life skills that would allow them to “Soar with the Eagles” as opposed to “Tangoing with the Turkeys”. One of the efforts was to teach his people how to budget and save. He told countless heart warming stories about the elevation of self esteem some of his younger staff members gained when they realised they had a decent amount of money in the bank. Do you even know if any of your employees are struggling under the burden of financial distress? Grant’s Book, “The Affinity Principle” contains many great tips like this. |

A Simple, Helpful Tip |
Purchasing a decent $250 Coffee machine and a monthly supply of beans will cost you about the same as a take away coffee every second day. So if you are having two or three takeaway coffees per day, the savings will be significant. |
