WISH VIP Fortnightly Bulletin – Edition 9

The AFL Grand Final has come and gone and there were some fascinating lessons in it.

On the previous weekend, Geelong had a relatively easy Preliminary Final against Brisbane and Sydney played a “down to the wire”, hard, bruising game against Collingwood. Geelong had an 8 day break and Sydney 7 days.

Normally, during the National Anthem before the game, I can get a feel for the strength of intention of the teams and can predict who will win. I have not been wrong for the past 7 years, until this year.

Sydney’s Intention was strong and felt stable, but there was another problem I had not woken up to. When an athlete, or a worker, is fatigued, they struggle to perform their skills to the level they are capable.

On Saturday, it became obvious 10 minutes into the first quarter that the Swans were off. They had not fully recovered from the Collingwood game and their general fatigue was interfering with their performance of skills and their capacity to play at intensity.

The result was a “blow-out”. The AFL may need to reconsider when they hold their bye. But the message for me, and for you, is to take notice of the profound impact of fatigue.

Introduction:

This week marks a change in the phase of the year. AFL Men’s Football is complete for another year and NRL will be over next week. Daylight Saving begins next weekend and term four of school commences.

And with that comes the feel of an approaching summer. Spirits lift and collectively people look toward the end of the year. This is the time when accidents can happen as workers take their minds off the job and begin focusing on holidays, rest breaks and time with family.

Let’s keep reminding them that the year is not done yet.

What is Resilience.

Two weeks ago, I visited the Peninsula Hotsprings to give a couple of talks to the staff about Resilience. This time, instead of rolling out my normal content, I chose to take things in a different direction.

I am always mindful of becoming stale and outdated in my message. The world is evolving and so must I. So, this time, I asked a series of questions and got some discussion going. This opened new ideas and a newer and fresher direction. So, I wrote about it and am sharing it with you as I feel it may assist you in your contemplations around Resilience in your workplace. Sleep Education

We often make assumptions around multiple life issues. One assumption is that people on the whole sleep pretty well, and if they have challenges, they know how to handle them.

The reality though is that many, many people’s sleep is below par. Many struggle to get to sleep or suffer with night-time wakefulness. And the problem is that they do not know how to remedy the problem, often begin self-medicating and eventually the problem becomes chronic.

Some people, I was amazed to learn, avoid going to bed because they fear not being able to fall asleep.

High Quality Sleep is a foundational pillar in the quest for sound physical and mental wellbeing.

Ahna Da Vina is an incredibly gifted sleep expert. She has been educating workforces and individuals for years. Some of your people have teenage kids who do not sleep well, and it creates incredible tension in the home. She is brilliant in educating and supporting anyone who simply wishes to learn about sleep, or who wants to overcome sleep challenges

A Simple, Helpful Tip

Incorporate more walking in your day. Encourage your team to do the same. Sitting all day has been termed “the new smoking”.

Walking tips include:

  • Go walking when making phone calls. It gets some movement happening and takes away the distractions on your screen.
  • Choose to have walking meetings. I have been doing this for years. A walking meeting around Melbourne’s Albert Park Lake takes about 50 minutes, which is perfect.
  • Take a stroll in the evenings after eating. Even better, find a nice grassy place and walk barefoot for 20 minutes or more. The free electrons rising from the natural terrain will neutralize free radicals circulating in your body.
  • Try challenging yourself and take at least one long walk on the weekend. Walking at a reasonable pace, one kilometre should take 10 minutes. A 10km walk should take about an hour and forty minutes. You could even get a few teams together at work and train for the Oxfam Trailwalker or Coast Trek.
